The inauguration Hui of the National Council of Maori Nurses was October 1983.

An international profile was immediately established by presenting papers in Israel, Rarotonga and New Guinea.

Te Kaunihera is the only mandated body by Iwi to represent Maori on health issues, gained by visiting iwi around the motu.

Workforce development is one of the core business strategies of Te Kaunihera. Many Maori nurses have been at the forefront in the developments of health organisations.

Quality and Best Practice are also core business strategies and this includes creating strategic relationships with other National Maori Associations and other Nursing Associations.
