Waerea ki te ara ki te Ora - Leading the way towards total well-being

Te Ohanga Mataora Paetahi- Bachelor in Health Sciences Maori (Nursing)

Oho Ake whanau Ora is a unique project that has developed a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences Maori (Nursing). The degree includes all of the current clinical requirements to become a registered nurse and includes tikanga hauora (te reo me ona tikanga).

This is an innovative model driven and supported by an innovative joint venturing between two national Maori health organisations, National Council of Maori Nurses, Nga Ngaru Hauora O Aotearoa (Maori Health Providers Collective) and Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi named Te Ohanga Mataora.

Progress Update 2008

The highly anticipated Launch of the Bachelor of Health Sciences Maori Nursing -Te Ohanga Mataora Paetahi took place at Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi, Whakatane on Friday, 7th November 2008. The launch was held in conjunction with the Annual Mataatua Kaumatua Day at Awanuiarangi. We were blessed with beautiful weather on the day which encouraged over 200 supporters and kaimahi to attend the powhiri commencing at 9.30am.

Prof. Hingangaroa (Graham) Smith (CEO of Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi) opened the launch ceremony followed by guest speaker Hon Tariana Turia (Paati Maori)  and Mere Balzer (Immediate Past President of Te Kaunihera O Nga Neehi Maori) . The documentation of Te Ohanga Mataora was blessed and the Te Ohanga Mataora Cake was cut by Aunty Puti O'Brien (Patroness of Te Kaunihera) and a representative from Awanuiarangi.

The Executive Committees of  Te Kaunihera O Nga Neehi Maori and Nga Ngaru Hauora O Aotearoa were pleased with the day, finally being able to reflect on their hard mahi over the past 5 years. On behalf of Te Kaunihera O Nga Neehi Maori & Nga Ngaru Hauora O Aotearoa Executive Committees we would like to thank all of the supporters and kaimahi of Te Ohanga Mataora over the past five years as we look forward to the first Te Ohanga Mataora intake in February 2009.

Progress Update 2007

This exciting project is still progressing towards NZQA accreditation.  The project leader to finalise the accreditation process is Linda Thompson.

Linda is currently working along side Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi to resubmit the curriculum to the NZQA accreditation panel.

In response to the many queries about Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi and its progress with the accreditation of Te Ohanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Maori (Nursing), the team involved in its preparation wish to advise that a full response has been made recently to the August 06 feedback from both panels - the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ).

Most of the requirements were of a minor nature but the major concern was with the clinical placements of tauira. To address that concern, signed letters of support were required. Realistically a February 07 start date was not envisaged but there are high hopes that progress might allow for a start in July 07.

As Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa is planning to open its long awaited site in Auckland there are clear indicators (based on preliminary discussions with TEC) that delivery of Te Ohanga Mataora will be best suited to be from such a site. The planning committee is working towards that end. Within its planning, the team is mindful of mounting protest to the entry of Te Ohanga Mataora into the fiercely contested tertiary field for the provision of a Nursing degree but it is confident and committed to the ideal that a Wananga initiative in the field is timely and necessary for New Zealand to have a Maori provider in the health sector for the training of Nurses. The team believes that its accreditation documentation is of a very high standard and should meet the requirements being demanded.

Wira Gardiner

Interim CEO

Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi
